4th 9 Weeks Study Guide

8th Grade
Students should be able to
  • Write an appropriate system of linear equations or inequalities (given a problem context).
  • Solve systems of equations graphically and describe the 3 possible cases when using the graphing method.
  • Solve systems of equations algebraically using substitution or elimination method.
  • Graph the solution set of a system of linear inequalities in two variables and describe the solution set.
  • Solve word problems involving systems of linear equations.
  • Interpret solutions in problem contexts.
  • Describe the characteristics of parallel and perpendicular lines both algebraically (in terms of slope) and geometrically (in terms of angle properties).
  • Find the slopes of lines parallel to or perpendicular to a given line.
  • Apply properties of angle pairs formed by parallel lines cut by a transversal.
  • Describe the properties of the ratio of segments of parallel lines cut by one or more transversals and solve problems using these properties.
  • Explain the meaning of congruence: that all corresponding angles are congruent and all corresponding sides are congruent.
  • Define and provide examples for the following vocabulary:  System of equations, Solution to a system of equations, System of inequalities, Parallel lines, Perpendicular lines, Vertical angles, Adjacent angles, Supplementary angles, Complementary angles, Same side interior angles, Same side exterior angles, Alternate interior angles, Alternate exterior angles, Corresponding angles, Congruence, Transversal, Slope
7th Grade
Students should be able to
  • Simplify and evaluate algebraic and numeric expressions, using commutative, associative, and distributive properties as appropriate.
  • Find the absolute value of a number and understand it as a distance from zero on a number line.
  • Compare and order rational numbers, including repeating decimals and fractions.
  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide positive and negative rational numbers.
  • Solve word problems using rational numbers.
  • Describe patterns in the graphs of proportional relationships, both direct (y=kx) and inverse (y=k/x)
  • Given a figure in the coordinate plane, determine the coordinates resulting from a translation, dilation, rotation, or reflection.
  • Describe the meaning of similarity, visually compare geometric figures for similarity, and describe similarities by listing corresponding parts.
  • Describe the relationships among scale factors, length ratios, and area ratios between similar figures.
  • Use scale factors, length ratios, and area ratios to determine side lengths and areas of similar geometric figures.
  • Translate verbal phrases to algebraic expressions.
  • Use the addition and multiplication properties of equality to solve one-step and two-step equations.
  • Use the order of operations to solve problems.
  • Define and provide examples for the following vocabulary:  Absolute value, Rational numbers, Number line, Integers, Rules for integer operations, Coordinate plane, Translation, Dilation, Rotation, Reflection, Similar figures, Corresponding sides, Corresponding angles, Scale factors, Algebraic expressions, Equation, Solution to an equation, Order of operations.
